Born in Dagenham, London, Hayes grew up in East London and went to Barclay Junior School in Leyton, where he captained the school football team from the age of 7. He later attended Norlington School for Boys and The Bromfords School in Wickford, Essex.
Hayes started his footballing career as a school boy with Norwich City where he spent 3 years, before signing for Scunthorpe United in 2002. He made over 115 appearances, scoring 33 goals. Hayes scored 19 goals in one season to help Scunthorpe gain promotion to League One in 2004–2005.
Hayes joined Barnsley in the summer of 2005 and impressed the Oakwell faithful highly by scoring the opener in the League One Play off final in May 2006 as well as calmly scoring from the spot in the penalty shoot out which Barnsley won 4–3 gaining them promotion to the Championship. At the time of writing, Hayes has made 57 appearances for the Reds scoring 17 goals along the way.
On 23 February 2007, he joined League One side Huddersfield Town on loan with view to a permanent deal, as cover for striker Andy Booth, partially because he was falling down Barnsley's pecking order following the signing of Hungarian duo István Ferenczi and Péter Rajczi.[1]
On 10 March 2007, he scored his first goal for Huddersfield Town in their 2–0 home victory against local neighbours Bradford City. On 22 March, he returned to Scunthorpe.
On 10 May 2010, he signed on a free transfer for Championship side Preston on a 3 year contract.[2] He scored his first goal for Preston from the penalty spot in a 5–0 thrashing Vs Stockport County in the League Cup. Hayes then scored his second in the same game after a great run and set up by fellow striker Josh King.
Hayes returned to Barnsley on loan on October 23, 2010 as part of a deal to extend Iain Hume's loan at Preston.
Hayes was released early from his contract by Preston. Interest from Scunthorpe, Watford and Charlton Athletic was speculated, indeed Charlton released a statement on their website stating that negotiations were at an advanced stage.
On 20 June it was announced that Hayes was a third of a triple signing completed by Charlton Athletic. He scored his first goal for Charlton in a 1-2 away win at Notts County.
Hayes is the youngest brother of former Arsenal winger and Former Dover Athletic manager Martin Hayes, who is 17 years his senior.
Until he quit Scunthorpe United, he lived in Barton upon Humber, on the Chartdale estate.
